Who Hires a Typist?

In these modern times, does anyone really hire a typist anymore? Honestly, isn’t a typist a thing of the past? As archaic as an old, stiff typewriter? After all, with the advent of computers in schools, and with PCs being about as common in homes as TVs, don’t most adults know how to type?

The answer may surprise you. Not everyone knows how to type. And the many who do may not be proficient at typing—or enjoy it. Some still use the tedious old “hunt and peck” method. Even those who are skilled and do enjoy typing may not be able to keep up with the volume of information that needs to be typed.

As a result, typists abound, as do the employers and clients who need them. You can find typists locally and online. Freelance typists are especially popular these days, as you can contact them and have your typing project completed swiftly—sometimes even within the same day!

Businesses may hire a typist to type official documents, records, forms, employee handbooks, data entry, notes, memos, letters, and transcripts. The sheer volume of written information that needs to be produced or documented by businesses is often more than some can handle on their own, particularly if they don’t have efficient typing skills. Businesses often make use of transcribers, specialized typists who type from audio or video recordings. In the medical field, medical transcriptionists are experts at recognizing and accurately typing medical terminology. Similarly, legal transcriptionists have special training and experience transcribing legal documents and transcripts accurately and in required formats.

Students may hire a typist to type up their handwritten papers, essays, or notes, thus producing clean, readable documents that are properly formatted and ready to be turned in. Since some students find typing to be tedious or even difficult, hiring a typist saves them the frustration and time which could be better used studying or writing.

Authors may hire a typist to type their handwritten or dictated work into properly formatted manuscripts ready to be submitted to a publisher or to be self-published. Authors may understandably prefer to utilize their time in writing creatively as opposed to typing and formatting content.

Teachers may even hire a typist to help deal with the large number of documents that they do not have time to type themselves.

Individuals may hire a typist for a variety of reasons such as typing up resumes, letters, emails, articles, letters, diaries, stories, or a myriad of other unique, personal reasons.

By now it should be obvious that even in these modern times, it’s not uncommon to encounter individuals who have not learned to type, have no desire to type, or are simply so inefficient at it that it’s well worth their time and money to hire a speedy professional.

So who hires a typist? Absolutely anyone who needs or desires a typist’s beneficial services!
